The New Me

Who am I kidding, I’m stubborn as a mule. Well, it’s the start of 2017 and what better time to change things up a bit than with a fresh calendar. While this newsletter will continue to serve primarily to inform my clients, friends, and colleagues about the ongoing of real estate in New York City, I want to mix in some personal thoughts; to share with you what’s going on in my world, because maybe it will resonate with you and what’s going in in your world.
The New Year’s resolution: I’ve never really been one to set a resolution. I’ve also never really taken the time to ask why? I’m guessing that I don’t set New Year’s resolutions because in the back of my mind I know I’ll disappoint myself and fall off my resolution relatively quickly after the New Year. Or maybe it’s because I’ve never been the type to keep a rigid yearly calendar so there isn’t such a marked difference between January and June (other than the darn cold weather). But the truth is, it’s nice to implement change and improvement in your life. As I said, I’m too stubborn to add a New Year’s resolution. Instead, something less abrupt and (hopefully) more constant shifted in me at the end of 2016. Rather than resolve to improve in every facet of my life dramatically, at the end of last year, I learned to embrace moderation.
For me, this acceptance came in the form of nutrition and physical activity. I’ve had an amazing run as a real estate agent, and I’m very lucky to be where I am. But it’s come at a cost in other areas of my life and for me, health has greatly suffered. I, like many of you I’m sure, start and stop and start and stop. The 10-day diet, 14-day exercise kick, only to come crashing down with 4 big nights (and how easy that is to do in this town).
I finally realized that moderation is the key – regular exercise that doesn’t have to be treated like my last workout on earth. One day it’s a 30-minute light cardio workout, the next day I’m lifting more weight than I ever thought I could. One day its protein, veggies, and complex carbs, the next day its veggie pizza. My point is, I’ve finally started to move towards a more constant, moderate routine. And so far I am loving it. Despite turbulence at work to start the year, I feel healthy and grounded. I feel like I have a routine that has kept me emotionally on track and allowed me to limit the usual roller-coaster of stress we regularly feel in NYC. And the best part about it is that since it’s all coming in moderation, I’ve not needed to make unrealistic and unsustainable massive life changes. You may not notice a difference if we sat down for dinner, but I do. And with this stability I hope to provide my clients even better service in 2017, one grounded in a more thoughtful, relaxed, and stable version of me.
So here’s to 2017, the year of consistency and choosing not to resolve!
